Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word

Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word;
Curb those who by deceit or sword
Would wrest the kingdom from your Son
And bring to naught all He has done.
Curb those who by deceit or sword
Would wrest the kingdom from your Son
And bring to naught all He has done.
Lord Jesus Christ, your power make known,
For you are Lord of lords alone;
Defend your holy Church that we
May sing your praise eternally.
For you are Lord of lords alone;
Defend your holy Church that we
May sing your praise eternally.
O Comforter of priceless worth,
Send peace and unity on earth;
Support us in our final strife
And lead us out of death to life.
Send peace and unity on earth;
Support us in our final strife
And lead us out of death to life.
*Luther wrote this prayer at a time of political and religious unrest. Yet we can look back and see that God listened to the prayers of His people and preserved them. This serves to remind us that we can sing this prayer joyfully, remembering the promise of Romans 8:
38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I love that Dwight, Cosette and AJ are learning this hymn in chapel. It is truly beautiful. Tonight, as I heard Cosette singing it in her room, I am thankful for Martin Luther and for being Lutheran.
