Would you rather travel to Paris or to Germany? Would you rather climb a cliff or jump out of a plane? You know, simple questions like that. We took turns asking around the table, skipping Garrison each time.
You see, Garrison is not usually interested in these kinds of games. It makes sense. As an autistic 23 year old, it's just not his thing. He'd much rather sit back and quote Disney movies, radio ads or verses from the Bible. Often, I'm ok with that, but sometimes I like to challenge him-push him out of his comfort zone a bit-it often backfires. He can get agitated quickly-or even angry. I felt like this was a game he would enjoy, so I asked him to join us. "Garrison, ask Dwight a Would You Rather question." He seemed hesitant. In my head I thought, he just doesn't understand what I want him to do. So, I explained the game again and gave him an example. He just kept looking at me and whispering "mom, mom". Then it hit me. He knew exactly what to do. He just didn't want to ask Dwight the questions. He wanted to ask me. :)
Garrison has always had a fixation with/on me. Maybe it's normal, maybe it's not. At times, it can be endearing. At times, it can be downright annoying. I try to focus on the endearing part. I'll sneeze in the kitchen and hear "Bless you, my mom" from down in the basement. Gregg will ask Garrison to take out the trash and Garrison stares at me until I tell him it's ok to obey his father and take out the trash. If I had a dollar for everytime he pats me on my right shoulder and says, "It's ok, mom", I'd be rich! I mean, really rich. Not even kidding.
So here are Garrison's Would You Rather questions. (He would answer for me before I had the chance, but that's beside the point. It was fascinating how well he really does know me.)
If you went to Outback Steakhouse, would you rather eat a cheeseburger or steak? Steak.
Would you rather watch Live With Kelly & Michael or Gilmore Girls? Gilmore Girls.
Would you rather drink soda or sweet tea? sweet tea.
Would you rather bake brownies or cookies? brownies
And here was the one that got me. The very last question he asked.
Would you rather be my mom or a teacher? my mom.
Oh Garrison, you just melted my heart. Who knew you could still do that at your age?
